British weather is renowned for being dull and dreary however it is also known for its changeability. This year we have experienced heavy snow falls and long periods of temperatures below zero that lasted well into spring time. The snow and ice however have since thawed and we have even had a successfully sunny and hot bank holiday….however this is sadly not something we are able to become accustomed to. With weather warnings of heavy rain and gusts of winds up to 70mph only a few weeks away from summer, this reinforces our message that your documents require to be stored in a safe, secure and compliant environment all year round.
It has been about 9 months since flash floods severely damaged archives that were stored in Chester Town Hall’s basement. Hundreds of archive boxes filled with historic documents were damaged when a foot of water flooded the basement, this left documents that date back to the 17th century with little hope of survival. The council since then have invested large amounts of money into restoring the water-damaged documents. This cost could have been avoided by ensuring the correct storage facilities had been used initially chosen. The cheapest and easiest storage solutions might not always be the most cost effective solution long term, as in this scenario.
